Boat building is a craft that has been around for millennia. The first boats were created around 40,000 years ago. These boats were tree trunks that had been hollowed out to allow occupants places to sit. Unless you are extremely adventurous, it is unlikely that this is what you have in mind when considering building a boat. There have been many styles of boat between then and now many of those are easy enough to build for the average craftsman with the right classic boat plan.
It is a natural tendency for humans to be drawn to the sea. For many it takes the form of going to the beach or walking along the bank of a river. For others it takes the form of a love of boating. When you are doing something in the same way as people in the past, you are able to understand them in a way you are not otherwise able to. This understanding is appealing for the historian and craftsman alike. For the historian, it can give insights into the culture and lifestyle of those living in the past, even if that past is as near as 50 years ago.

The answer to this question definitely depends on how you are going to use the boat, how many people you want with you in the boat, and what body of water you will be in when you are sailing.

Perhaps 90% of modern planning trailer boats are made from just two materials, aluminium and fibreglass. Both were developed in the late 1950s, replacing plywood or “bondwood” as the favoured small boat building materials.
The advantage of the new materials, especially fibreglass, was the manufacturer’s ability to produce identical boats quickly, more efficiently, and with relatively unskilled labour. As you can imagine, this revolutionised recreational powerboat manufacturing, opening the door for the establishment of many new companies, as well giving builders the ability to experiment with different hull types and configurations.
Alloy boats or “tinnies” as they are known throughout Australia, are favourites with small boat buyers and inland, estuary fishermen. Remarkably, up to 90% of boats in the 0 – 4.5 m size class are manufactured from aluminium. The majority of these craft are built using sheets of relatively light weight aluminium (1.2 – 3.0 mm) which are “pressed” to provide rigidity and strength.
Pressed aluminium boats are most popular in sizes up to around 5.0 m, and have a number of advantages over fibreglass boats. They are light, durable and require less horsepower and in the smaller sizes usually less expensive than fibreglass.
Conversely, they are also quite hard riding and noisy, and they rattle and vibrate underway. They don’t have the practical working life of most fibreglass as they suffer from electrolysis or cracking after years of pounding over the water.
In addition to the pressed alloy boat builders, there are specialist manufacturers of what are called “plate” alloy boats. Plate alloy boats are generally considered to be stronger and more durable (albeit much heavier) because they are built using thicker alloy sheet (up to 6.0 mm). Plate alloy boats can usually be identified by their smooth hull finish along the topsides, as opposed to the panelled look of the lighter weight pressed alloy models.
Fibreglass boats have been popular in Australia since they were first developed in the late 1950s. Generally speaking, fibreglass trailer boats are most popular in sizes above 5.0 m in length. On the used boat market, there are plenty of top quality models available.
Fibreglass boats are easier to build than alloy boats, but more importantly, fibreglass boat designers are able to create much more sophisticated and softer riding hull shapes. As a general rule, fibreglass boats also handle better through turns, are sportier, run much quieter, are more attractive and more luxuriously outfitted.
The major shortcoming of the fibreglass trailer boat is its weight, at least when compared with a pressed alloy boats under 5.5m in length. Glass boats, are often heavy and need more power for good performance and demand a more powerful tow vehicle.
Contrary to wide believe, fibreglass boats are considerably tougher than aluminium. Fibreglass doesn’t rip or tear as aluminium can do. If you were to hit rock or a submerged object, you are less likely to hole than if in aluminium. Also the bounding caused by trailer travel and choppy seas, does not weaken structurally fibreglass as it does that of aluminium. Therefore it is not uncommon to see many 40 year old fibreglass boats still happily working the waterways! You do have to be careful on the launch ramp or near rocks etc., to avoid cracking and gouging the gelcoat or outer skin of the fibreglass.

Looking to build a boat you can easily construct within a few weekends? Then, you should seriously consider going over some small boat plans.
Quite honestly, I don’t believe anyone with the inclination and interest fail at completing a simple boat. It’s one of those things you can build that will only require you have a basic grasp of woodworking skills. Yet, the returns of having successfully built a boat of your own is worth more than the effort, it’s actually a no brainer for you to decide to build your own boat.
Small boats works perfectly with novice boat builders. It allows you to get your feet wet in the process of building a boat without having to undergo all the frustration and risk. That’s not saying advanced builders are wont to build this type of boat too. I’ve built a couple of boats and I still derive so much pleasure in building a small boat.
However, just so the process of building a boat go smoothly for you, I strongly suggest you go over some of these things:
You need to decide what type of boat building material you are going to use. Most common materials used for simple boats are wood. And it makes sense too especially considering that most novice boat builder would have a basic solid foundation in woodworking. This material is suitable for such builders.
However, there’s no stopping you if you ever decide to use other materials as well like aluminum or fiberglass. Both these materials certainly has its advantages but you need to make sure you have the tools and skill to work with such materials.
The technique on top of my head when it comes to small boat building is stitch and glue method. Probably since this method is considered to be one of the easiest to implement. And it also helps that this technique requires lesser materials used.
However, ply over frame method of building a small boat is also something you can also consider. It’s not as easy as stitch and glue but its durability more than makes up for whatever additional processes you need to do for this technique.
As I’ve pointed out earlier, small boats are generally the easiest boat to build. But you should not make the mistake of discounting the use of good small boat plans. After all, it is still the quality of the boat’s blueprints that can single-handedly make or break a boat building project.
This is why, I’ve always emphasized on having quality boat plans. A strong indicator of a plan’s quality is its easy to follow instruction. No need for guesswork, no need for unnecessary confusion. And I’ve personally observed that most boat plans that has this functionality are those that comes with elaborate illustrations. Probably because images are able to clarify things that no amount of words can.

As all of us haven’t grown up around a boat, we may know little about the every single details of boats. The jargon related to a boat may seem confusing to you at first. You may have watched that White’s Stuart Little where Stuart and his sailor friend mock another boat’s owner for not knowing the boat jargon. “…A jib from a jibe…or a luff from a leech…or a deck from a dock….or a mast from a mist.” Here I am bringing some terminologies for you to know that would be useful if you are into making a small wooden boat.

Usually Boat-builders say ‘fore’ and ‘aft’ when they talk about front and back on a boat. And they tell left and right as port and starboard. Interestingly port and left have the same number of letters. The middle region of a boat is called as ‘mid ship’. Athwart ship refers to something that is running across the boat, perpendicular to the center-line of the boat, like a thwart.
They call it bulkhead what is an athwart ship structural member that compartmentalizes the interior of the boat. You may have watched the movie ‘TITANIC’ where bulkheads were notoriously inadequate. A flat face on the stern of a boat is called transom. They call it Kayaks what are pointy at both ends. Actually stem and bow are used interchangeably. However, bow refers more generally to the front area of a boat. The stem is the extreme bow. The shape, or structure of it – as in, “a sharp stem”, or “a fair curve to her stem.”
Fair is the term that is used whenever a boat is built. The boat-builder always remains alert about the fairness when wood is bent or curved or cut, or a line drawn. The “fair curve” or line is the one that has to be very fair as it follows the path it must take around the hull of the boat. And a fair line is free of extraneous bumps or hollows while an unfair line is always needed to be smoothed out.
You will find that there’s seldom any curve that must be more fair than the sheer of a boat. The sheer of a boat is the break in the hull what runs from bow to stern. It separates the side of the hull from the deck of the boat. This is actually a general area and the visual break this line creates. There are some other things around the sheer line of a boat like sheer clamp, rail, or rub rail etc.
Now, here comes chine what is a lengthwise break in the shape of a hull. This distinguishes it from a round-bottomed boat that is made of some other material rather than plywood. Hard-chine boat consists off just one or two chines. However, a multi-chine boat may get many.
And coaming is a raised rim that protects the cockpit of the boat. Actually it can be anything that deflects water from the cockpit.
When an angle cut in one piece of wood such that it fits against another piece of wood., it is called ‘bevel’.
In a boat, ‘rabbet’ is a kind of groove cut in a piece of wood to accept another. And a mold is basically a structure that you build to form the shape of a part that you may need. Most “stitch and glue” boats take their own shape and that’s why no jig or mold is necessary for their hull. You must make a jig to laminate the deck beams for many CLC boats. You need to glue together multiple thin strips to achieve a given thickness to laminate something. You may make it possible to bend something to a tight camber. And a camber is a regular curve, a section of a circle.
Well let me tell you that it makes me recoil when I hear the confusion between paddles and oars. In fact you face forward when you use a paddle. However in a kayak or canoe you can not use an oar. You should not call a kayak or canoe paddle an “oar,”. Moreover, don’t call a normal locomotion of a kayak or canoe as “rowing.” Usually oars are mounted in oarlocks on the rail of a boat.

A rookie boat enthusiast has far more challenges than most boat builders in understanding the scope of their boat building project before they commence to start the build. If you are new at this boat building venture, then stop right now and think what you are doing.
The foundation of any successful boat building project, is to find a source with detailed plans of boats as well as possibly other information materials like boat building guides and videos.
Do yourself a huge favor and invest a few bucks to gain access to detailed plans of boats, help videos and boat building guides. Any free information on the internet, I can tell you for a fact will not be of high quality nor comprehensive enough to be of much to you.
Another big tip. Make sure you select a boat size that will fit into the workshop space you plan to use. There is a quote ” number nine sausage in a number seven skin”. You will feel miserable the whole time you work on your boat project if you are cramped for space.
I have seen it a number of times where my boat builder friends take on a project too large for their workshop and ended up having to work away from their home on their boat project because of lack of space. Very poor planning indeed. One friend had to rent a building for 8 months. I have no idea what he was thinking when he picked the size of boat that he did.
Here is a good rule of thumb. For the build area for the boat frame you should allow a minimum 6 feet all the way around the boat for easy access. Remember you need space for tools, hardware, and boat parts to manage as you work.

If you do have limited boat building skills, you should study different types of techniques that really work for amateurs after which choose a construction style that suits your abilities. There is nothing worse than taking on a complicated build plan, and struggle because you lack the knowledge or guidance to finish your project.
There’s one boat building construction that rises above the rest, as the best option for the amateur boat builder, best known as the stitch and glue method. There are a number of reasons why to choose the stitch and glue boat building process over frame building especially; you don’t need any special tools, typically whatever you have in your workshop will do. If you can follow directions and read blue print drawings, you will do fine with the stitch and glue method. If your boat project is not too large, you should be able to build a simple small boat in less than a week.
This stitch and glue boat building process basically uses plywood planks which have been cut per the dimensions in your plans of boats layout. After which the planks are connected using the “stitch” method to assemble the two sections with copper wire. All section pieces are tied together using this process.
Then epoxy glue is used to seal the seams. After the glue has dried, the wire can be removed or just trimmed off flush to the surface. Once the rough shape is completed, you then cover the outside using epoxy and fiberglass sheeting to form the outside finished shell. Finally you apply 3-4 coats of varnish to the shell as an extra sealer to make it waterproof. Now you have a boat that is sturdy and waterproof plus pretty tough also; not easily damaged. The stitch and glue process is very low cost and uses minimum effort to produce a basic boat design.
One of the most critical factors for building a boat though are the detailed wood plans for boats. You may have heard it many times, but it is surprising how many people try to build a boat project without proper plans of boats to follow. It is extremely foolhardy and wasteful of your precious time and money to do so. Take it from me, I made that mistake once. 5 and 3 months later I scrapped the whole project and started over.
