Why build a boat from a classic boat plan
Why build a boat from a classic boat plan
Boat building is a craft that has been around for millennia. The first boats were created around 40,000 years ago. These boats were tree trunks that had been hollowed out to allow occupants places to sit. Unless you are extremely adventurous, it is unlikely that this is what you have in mind when considering building a boat. There have been many styles of boat between then and now many of those are easy enough to build for the average craftsman with the right classic boat plan.
It is a natural tendency for humans to be drawn to the sea. For many it takes the form of going to the beach or walking along the bank of a river. For others it takes the form of a love of boating. With people having been in boats for so many years building with a classic boat plan gives you a connection to the boat builders of the past.
When you are doing something in the same way as people in the past, you are able to understand them in a way you are not otherwise able to. This understanding is appealing for the historian and craftsman alike. For the historian, it can give insights into the culture and lifestyle of those living in the past, even if that past is as near as 50 years ago.
For the craftsman, building a classic boat plan allows them to learn techniques that were used to build boats with hand tools. Learning wood working with hand tools, before moving on to power tools, is a common technique giving the craftsman the opportunity to learn the basics before moving on to more advanced techniques.
The answer to this question definitely depends on how you are going to use the boat, how many people you want with you in the boat, and what body of water you will be in when you are sailing.
Your experience is also an important factor. For the beginning boat builder, it is a good idea to start with a smaller boat and then move on to something larger. Jon boats, dories, and canoes are all good choices.
A jon boat plan will give you a small, flat bottom boat. There are usually benches in the boat. Jon boats are commonly used for hunting or fishing in flat water. A dory also has a flat bottom, but has curved or slanted sides that curve in to meet at the bow and the stern. A canoe is also a great choice because of its size and versatility.
Regardless of the classic boat plan you choose to use, the result will be a great looking boat that can be used for years to come. Whether you are building a classic boat for the nostalgia of it, to develop boat building skills, or simply for the pleasure of it, you are sure to build a boat you can be proud of for years to come.

Downsizing your Fishing Boat to an Inflatable Boat
Downsizing your Fishing Boat to an Inflatable Boat
Imagine this scenario: you use a fishing boat that is pretty big and unwieldy. You find it pretty difficult to use this because of its size and specifically when you are going in to the swirly and violent waters, things become pretty difficult. You would ideally like to use this in a manner so that this becomes manageable and can also carry a lot of people and other objects easily.
An inflatable boat can be the right solution to your problem. An inflatable boat is one of the lightest things in the world and it has the amazing capability to carry a lot of things on board, which include a lot of people too without really getting flustered or even getting capsized.
The fishing boat can easily be swapped for an inflatable boat because of the inherent merits that the fishing boat brings to you. The fishing boat can really make things a bit unmanageable for you. The fishing boat can even, depending on where you are going, become a bit dangerous because of the swirly and violent waters. This poses a great risk of the entire fishing boat capsizing.
]]>
This can not only destroy a lot of precious objects, but can also drown the people who have been on board. Hence, a fishing boat can always be a risky proposition. Also, a fishing boat can take a lot of effort if you want to use the oars because of the heavy and unwieldy nature of the boat.
The inflatable fishing boat on the other hand, brings a lot of values to the table for you that the fishing boat might not be able to bring at all. First, the lightness of the entire inflatable fishing boat will come in very handy for whoever wants to take it to the waters.
This boat is ideal for all types of waters and water bodies. This boat can easily take on the violent and the swirly waters very smoothly and enables you to enjoy your ride totally. The oars that come with it are absolutely light and it does not take a lot of effort to guide the boat easily by anyone.
The inflatable boat also has a lot of space that enables it to accommodate a lot of people on board and also accommodate a lot of objects. You can easily put the heaviest of stuff on the boat and can rest assured that the boat will not let you down. You will not really need a boat cover or a boat trailer when the off season comes. These boats use pretty big sized gas outboard motors and save a lot of gas.

Guide to Boat Financing
Guide to Boat Financing
You’re ready to buy a boat, but you are new to the world of boat financing. Don’t worry! There are lots of ways to make your dream boat purchase a reality.
Boats vary in price depending on the size, make, and shape. A new boat is a great deal more expensive than a used boat. There are many different options when purchasing a boat which will allow you the luxury of owning your dream. Remember, you don’t have to buy your boat outright. You can explore finance options which will allow you to make a monthly payment on your boat. A monthly boat payment can actually cost less than a monthly payment for a new car. Financing will allow you the option of buying the boat of your dreams, rather than settling for a lesser boat which may be a disappointment.
Many years ago, there were very few lenders who made boat loans. It wasn’t a common type of loan and there was some concern regarding risk. Now, however, boat financing is popular and plentiful. You can finance your boat in many ways. Here are some options to consider:
1) Banks – Many local and regional banks are members of National Marine Bankers Association and offer loans directly to the boat buyer. Your own neighborhood bank may offer boat loans, and if you are already doing business at that bank, it may be able to offer you surprisingly good rates. You should also check boating magazines and websites, as banks that specialize in boat financing often advertise in these locations.

2) Credit unions – If you are already a member of a credit union, I encourage you to contact it first. They often offer the best rates and deliver excellent service to their members.
3) Boat dealers – Talk about one stop shopping! The same dealer who sells you a boat can also help you find a loan. Many boat dealers have finance managers available on staff who are National Marine Bankers Association marine lending specialists to assist you. There are benefits to financing through your boat dealer, not the least of which is convenience. A boat dealer will likely have established relationships with several finance sources, and may be able to get you a special deal on certain boats in return for handling financing. Some deals include low or no interest for the first several months and access to special warranty programs which can be included in your finance package. You may be able to acquire a lower down payment and longer financing terms. Marine finance specialists will often offer extended financing terms in recognition that a committed boat owner will keep up with boat maintenance, which will protect the overall value of the boat. I encourage you to talk to dealers who specialize in marine lending to gather more information.
As you can see, there are many options when it comes to boat financing. I encourage you to learn all you can from your local banks, credit unions, and boat dealers so you can make an informed decision on financing your purchase.

Boat & Marine Insurance Basics
Boat & Marine Insurance Basics
Boat insurance can be a very confusing topic, especially for first-time boat owners. No standards exist across insurance companies, so it is often up to the boat owners to read the fine print in order to figure out the specifics of their boat insurance policy. Not understanding these subtle differences before you choose an insurance provider can cost you thousands of dollars in the event of a loss. Losses come in two varieties, total losses and partial losses. Generally speaking, total loss policies typically fall into three categories:
– Agreed value is the simplest and most easily understandable of the total loss policy types. In an agreed value policy, the boat owner and the insurance company agree on a value, prior to the loss. In the rare event that a total loss occurs, the boat owner is paid the agreed upon amount.
– Actual cash value is determined by third party sources such as a used boat price guide and other comparable boats listed for sale. In a policy that is based on actual cash value, the amount a boat owner is paid is based on the value of the boat at the time of the loss. The boat insurance provider will either pay the insured value or the actual cash value at the time of the loss, whichever is lower.
– A boat replacement policy replaces your boat with a new boat. This type of coverage is only available to boat owners who purchased a new boat and will only last for the first two to three years of ownership. Once the boat reaches the age where a boat replacement policy is no longer applicable, the policy form will change to one of the two other types.
Although most people buy boat insurance for the rare occasions in which they experience a total loss, the majority of boat insurance claims are partial losses. Partial losses are handled a bit differently than total losses. Similarly to total loss policies, partial loss policies are not standardized and each insurance company may have their own spin. Generally speaking though, the differences boil down to two main points.
– Replacement cost and depreciated value differ in one key aspect. The amount a depreciated value policy pays is subject to depreciation, whereas in a replacement cost policy, depreciation is largely not factored in. Depreciation is calculated by the boat insurance companies using a predetermined, non-published depreciation schedule. Since depreciation reduces the amount you are paid in the event of a partial loss, boat owners would be best served finding a boat insurance provider who offers a replacement cost policy. Despite this difference, most replacement cost plans do not completely omit depreciation from their policy structure. Replacement cost plans tend to state specific parts that are subject to depreciation. These parts generally have shorter life spans, such as canvas, sails, or plastics. It should also be noted that depreciation is not applied to labor, storage charges, and other non real property items.
– Some insurance providers will actually discount depreciation if you agree to use a remanufactured part. This reduced depreciation can save boat owners thousands of dollars in a partial loss. There are even some insurance companies that don’t apply any depreciation to remanufactured parts. Again, boat owners would be best advised to seek out boat insurance providers that use the latter and don’t apply depreciation to the amount they pay.
No two boat owners likely have the exact same requirements for a boat insurance provider. Understanding these subtle differences in policies is essential to choosing the best insurance provider to meet your specific needs.
