Why build a boat from a classic boat plan
Why build a boat from a classic boat plan
Boat building is a craft that has been around for millennia. The first boats were created around 40,000 years ago. These boats were tree trunks that had been hollowed out to allow occupants places to sit. Unless you are extremely adventurous, it is unlikely that this is what you have in mind when considering building a boat. There have been many styles of boat between then and now many of those are easy enough to build for the average craftsman with the right classic boat plan.
It is a natural tendency for humans to be drawn to the sea. For many it takes the form of going to the beach or walking along the bank of a river. For others it takes the form of a love of boating. With people having been in boats for so many years building with a classic boat plan gives you a connection to the boat builders of the past.
When you are doing something in the same way as people in the past, you are able to understand them in a way you are not otherwise able to. This understanding is appealing for the historian and craftsman alike. For the historian, it can give insights into the culture and lifestyle of those living in the past, even if that past is as near as 50 years ago.
For the craftsman, building a classic boat plan allows them to learn techniques that were used to build boats with hand tools. Learning wood working with hand tools, before moving on to power tools, is a common technique giving the craftsman the opportunity to learn the basics before moving on to more advanced techniques.
The answer to this question definitely depends on how you are going to use the boat, how many people you want with you in the boat, and what body of water you will be in when you are sailing.
Your experience is also an important factor. For the beginning boat builder, it is a good idea to start with a smaller boat and then move on to something larger. Jon boats, dories, and canoes are all good choices.
A jon boat plan will give you a small, flat bottom boat. There are usually benches in the boat. Jon boats are commonly used for hunting or fishing in flat water. A dory also has a flat bottom, but has curved or slanted sides that curve in to meet at the bow and the stern. A canoe is also a great choice because of its size and versatility.
Regardless of the classic boat plan you choose to use, the result will be a great looking boat that can be used for years to come. Whether you are building a classic boat for the nostalgia of it, to develop boat building skills, or simply for the pleasure of it, you are sure to build a boat you can be proud of for years to come.

Flat Bottom Boat Plans – Which Boat Design Are You Building?
Flat Bottom Boat Plans – Which Boat Design Are You Building?
If you need a boat to course through calm and shallow waters, it is high time that you go over some good flat bottom boat plans. This type of boat design works perfectly in ponds and lakes or wherever there is not much fast currents that can possibly tip the boat as it doesn’t have the flexibility to ride out strong waves.
However, there are many types of flat bottom boats. You will have to choose depending on your preference as well as the exact nature in which you will be using the boat.
Some of these are:
Dories are those small, simple boats with sides that are relatively high making it ideal for fishing. This type of boat are one of the easiest to build as it is generally small in structure. Its average length is around 16 to 20 feet long. Those who engage in hobby fishing will find this boat to their liking.
Jon boats are those that are slightly bigger than dories and features bench style seating. Its design allows it not to make much noise thus, making this type of boat ideal for hunting. Jon boats are also known for being extremely stable and works well even in shallow waters.
If speed is high in your priority list, high speed runabouts will be the best option for you. It has a hull that is slightly elevated to make it ride out on the surface of the water rather than riding through the water. This design may cause the ride to be a bit choppy but it definitely makes up for its speed.
Air boats are also called fan boats or flat bottom punts. This is the type of boat that works well in marshes, lakes or shallow ravines. It has a propeller or engine installed which makes this boat easy to maneuver in an otherwise hard to navigate areas. This is commonly used by tourist guides.
These are some of more common choices you have if you wish to build a flat bottom boat.
Now, whichever type of boat you may choose depending on suitability, it is quite imperative that you procure the corresponding boat plans. Flat bottom boat plans of different types are easily available online. You only need to choose according to the boat type you want as enumerated above.
Additionally, you also need to consider the quality of the boat plan otherwise, you may find great difficulty during the construction process if the blueprints happen to be vague and not easy to implement. For example, I personally prefer my plans to have a very elaborate illustration to make each aspects of boat building clear. Being a visual person, instructions are clearer to me that way.
To anyone who have the same passion as I do, you may want to check out flat bottom boat plans of every kind which I find very helpful in building a boat. You may check out that resource here:
No Snow At The Boat Show!
No Snow At The Boat Show!
We had a few snowflakes last week that danced in on a frigid Canadian cold front that froze most of the USA. The sight of a few snowflakes in my backyard had me longing to head for the beach! But since it’s still cold on most of the sandy shores in my area, I did the next best thing. I went to a huge boat show last weekend and I took my wife; wanting to share something special with her. Big mistake!
It is a fisherman’s dream to be surrounded by every type of fishing boat imaginable. Even if you’re not one who likes to put a hook in the water, take a friend with you and you will have a lot of fun, if for no other reason than to shake your head and grimace at the prices involved in some of the water craft on display.
If however, you are a real angler, and enjoy any kind of fresh water fishing, there is a boat for you no matter what your preference. There are Bass boats, Jon boats, dinghies, flat bottom boats, inflatable boats, pontoon boats and boats that look so ridiculous that it questions why they should even be allowed on the water.
Fishing is supposed to be fun. It is always enjoyable for me because I don’t purposely make an effort to fish exclusively for bass; therefore I don’t really need a high tech, super powerful bass boat. By nature I’m a lazy man and fishing for largemouth bass or even smallmouth bass seems too much like work, so I prefer a simpler kind of fishing vessel. Recreational projects that require more than minimum effort and are expensive to pursue, are generally erased from my list of things I like to do.
I was really not in the market for a new boat, but the more I wandered down the aisles, enthralled by the latest in boating technology, the more my old boat seemed like a relic! Unfortunately my wife was not experiencing the same vibrations that had me salivating as I saw a beautiful 21foot fishing craft with everything a fisherman could want.
My days of investing a lot of money is a boat are gone. I read somewhere that a boat is a hole in the water in which you throw your money. I’ve had several boats and I know that statement to be true. This one that I was drooling over only cost , 582.00. My wife wasn’t nearly as cheerful after seeing that price tag.
If spending an enormous amount of money on something that will cart you around the river fast, then some of the big bass boats that have entered the market are just what you need to put a big dent in your wallet! Some of the vessels that will take you up and down the river in search of the elusive bass hit the ceiling at well over ,000.00! At a dollar a pound for fish, I would have to catch 50,000 fish for that boat to be economically feasible!
Not really wanting a new boat, I decided to test the boat buying waters by trying to explain to my wife why that new bathroom was just going to have to wait for a few years. Not overly impressed by my argument that a new fishing craft would greatly improve my mental health, she replied that after we complete her bathroom project, we could possibly consider a boat the whole family, including grandkids would enjoy; a pontoon boat.
A boat that will comfortably seat six or more people is not my idea of an ideal fishing craft. You can’t zip down the river at 50 miles per hour on a houseboat wanna be! It was a good thing that I wasn’t really serious about boat shopping. No matter what style of boat that catches your eye, it’s not likely your spouse will understand its importance, especially after she recovers from sticker shock!
As boat shows go, this one was fantastic! In addition to having just about every kind of boat known to man, this one had rows and rows of boating accessories that were designed to capture the heart of every red-blooded American boatman.
Besides GPS systems, fish finders, radar, VHF radios, audio systems, there were fresh water fishing reels, fresh water rods, tackle, as well as salt water rods and reels of every brand. This was a little confusing for me because the nearest salt water is 7 hours away.
Last weekend at the boat show was a welcomed relief from the stranglehold this winter has had on most of us. When arenas and civic centers are packed with boats, we know that spring is fast approaching!

Tips Of Purchasing The Right Jon Boats
Tips Of Purchasing The Right Jon Boats
Jon boats have become very popular with many people nowadays, because of their massive benefits as compared to some of the latest designs of boats for both transport and fishing. With the transom design, the outboard motor can be mounted on the boat. They have flat boats made of wood or sometimes aluminum and a bench that can fit three people or more people making them the perfect boats for fishing. If you are thinking of buying a Jon boat here are some tips that should guide you into choosing the right boat that fits your status.
The first and most important factor to consider before buying any boat is why you need the boat.
By identifying the functions that you want the boat to do for you, you will be able to choose the perfect size and design. Note that these boats are great for fishing and can be upgraded according to your needs. It is therefore advisable that you choose a dealer who will customize your package and give you a boat that fits your requirements.
Doing some research by scouring the internet and consulting with friends who have bought boats before will help you identify some of the best dealers of these boats both online and in the stores near you. Come up with a list of dealers selling the boats and start doing a side by side comparison so as to choose the best that will give you more value for your money. Do not always settle for the cheapest or the one that seems to be pocket-friendly, your aim should be to get the best that your pockets can afford. In fact here are quite a number of Jon boat dealers and large sports goods stores that sell the same kind of boats. It’s better to buy from these stores than the standard Jon boat dealers that are more expensive than the former.

When buying the boat, ensure that you ask all the necessary questions about the boat before buying without overlooking anything. For instance, you should ask the dealers to explain to you, the warranty you will receive after buying. There are many manufacturers of these boats in the market. Meaning the warranty and even quality of the product will differ from one manufacturer to the other.
How you intend to maintain your boat is also very vital when it comes to choosing the right boat for your fishing. Although the boat might be easy to maintain since it doesn’t need a lot of care even if you are using it in salty water, the wood also needs good care and attention to avoid rotting. You should ask your dealers to explain to you or give you a manual showing how to maintain and clean your boat for it to last longer.
Besides being perfect for fishing and shorter transportation, Jon Boats are easy to handle and safe to drive. This means that if you are new to boats and boating this is the right boats for beginners like you.

Tips On How To Build A Jon Boat
Tips On How To Build A Jon Boat
Building a boat can be quite addictive. Whether you use a jon boat to go fishing or otherwise, learning how to build a jon boat is the best way to go.
First, you can customize the jon boat in terms of its size and another thing is that it’s definitely cheaper and way more fun to build a jon boat.
Jon boats are generally used for fishing and duck hunting. What I liked most about this type of boat is its stability. And if you have experienced using it to go fishing you may agree with me when I say that it is very comforatble using the pedestal seats which also allows greater visibility for fishing.
A jon boat is also easier to launch and manipulate. And if I may say so, one of the easiest boat that you can build yourself.
Like with any project, building a jon boat require planning. And you have to keep in mind certain consideration. Among which are:
Before anything else, you need to set a certain amount that you are willing to spend to build the boat. This would determine many factors that goes into building the boat. It will determine the size, design and the materials you’ll be using to build a jon boat.

Building your own boat is generally cheaper than buying one but you still need to allocate a definite amount and stick to it with the rest of the planning.
There are generally four types of jon boat in terms of the materials used. These are aluminum, polyethylene, fiberglass and wood.
You have to decide which material you will use to build a jon boat keeping in mind the budget as well as what’s suitable for your needs.
Aluminum are generally the sturdiest ofall mtype and is used especially when you use the boat in rocky areas. So this is good for river fishing.
Polyethelyne is also a very good alternative if sturdiness and durability is high on your list of priorities. However, I personally have an issue with using polyethylene as constant dragging of the boat on dry grounds can damage polyethylene boats.
Fiberglass is good for fishing near sandbars. But it is not the cheapest of materials to buy.
Wood is the cheapest of all materials and to build a wooden jon boat would require some woodworking skills. The thing with wooden jon boats is you need to coat the wood well using special paints to add integrity to the structure and to prevent rot.
Most jon boats generally have a flat or near flat hull thus limiting its use to still or calm waters. However, for your purposes, you may customize some of its features including the motors you use, if you plan of adding any. You also need to determine the size of the boat and the number of decks and the capacity of the boat.
The definite dimension and measurement of the boat should be in place before starting the building process itself. And for this you’ll be needing a jon boat building plan.
A good building plan should take you through the whole process of it step-by-step. It should have a complete list of materials needed so you can have it prepared beforehand and see if it fits with your budget.
Personally, I found a very nifty catalog of boat plans which I find very helpful in this aspect. You may check it out here:
